Traditionally practitioners have been encouraged to undertake training to expand their technical legal knowledge, often at the expense of other areas of training and development.
Communication, the art of negotiation and project management skills can be just as crucial to a person’s profession success, yet many practitioners mistakenly fail to see the value in developing these skills.
In line with the SRA competence statement, technical legal knowledge is only one of the four areas in which practitioners must assess their competence; managing themselves, working with others and professional judgement are all areas which practitioners should now reflect upon. This may involve determining whether they are adept at critical thinking and information analysis and whether they can identify and use the most appropriate method and style of communication depending upon the circumstances.
To assist practitioners in this task, Datalaw have created a range of online personal skills webinars. Many of the courses within this section have been divided into two audience groups; fundamental level courses are intended for support staff, paralegals, trainees and newly qualified solicitors, whilst advanced titles are aimed at practitioners with several years PQE including senior solicitors, managers and partners.
For guidance on how to improve legal writing skills, Mac Mackay’s two-tiered legal writing course is essential; Business Writing Skills – The Fundamentals is ideal for those who have never taken any formal legal writing training, whilst our legal writing course for lawyers entitled Business Writing Skills - Advanced is perfect for senior solicitors and partners who undertake advanced legal writing and would like to hone their skills.
Other highlights within this section include Conducting Legal Research; Delivered by Emma Woodason, a law librarian with over 20 years’ research experience, this legal research training course is suitable for practitioners of all levels and is ideal for those wishing to undertake a legal research course online. During this session Emma will provide viewers with a comprehensive overview of traditional and online legal research practice and procedure.
